Mental Health Matters

We invite you to join us as we build a new healing story of individual and community mental health in Memphis.

Playback Memphis is thrilled to present Mental Health Matters, a workshop and short PSA documentary filmmaking experience that will cast a new vision for nourishing individual and community mental health in Memphis.

Small and intimate by design, this workshop will bring together youth, community organizers, mental health experts, educators, law enforcement professionals and everyday folx to explore reflections and stories of mental health for the purpose of creating effective mental health advocacy messaging.

The workshop and film project will focus on inquiry around the perceptions, attitudes and beliefs handed down to us about mental health- how they have served and not served us; while also providing individuals and institutions the opportunity to reframe and prioritize mental health as our strongest community asset through the power of art and ritual.

Participation will be accepted by an application review process. This workshop will be FREE to participate in and will involve 6 hours of professional development learning. Participants will be invited to support the development and design of this project’s Phase II, to be launched in 2022 (to include: additional story gathering workshops and a digital toolbox).

The foundation of Playback Memphis’ work is a commitment to telling honest stories that sometimes touch our vulnerability. For this reason, Playback Memphis takes great care to create a safe container and participant sharing is always by invitation. Since stories shared in the workshops potentially will be used within a public documentary, there will be processes built in and care taken to ensure that each participant feels their voice and story are represented in a manner that is honoring to them.
